Another day, another gem from Elon Musk. At a recent conference Musk announced that “in the distant future, (legislators) may outlaw driven cars because they’re too dangerous.” Think that this is the future for your grandchildren? Think again.
You may have heard that the genius behind Tesla is now bringing his self-driving car – or at least the autonomous technology-to market by this summer. The technology would allow drivers to have their cars take control on major roads such as parkways. Before you jump up and down with excitement, industry experts aren’t exactly sure if this is legal but the future is coming, and quickly.
There are of course other self-driving cars out there. The most obvious is the Google car. Mercedes-Benz, Infiniti and Honda all have cars on the road with the capability of driving themselves on the highway – the difference is those cars require drivers to remain alert, in control and have their hands on the wheel.
But the future is changing and more quickly than most would believe. For example Mercedes unveiled the F 015, a futuristic car that drives itself and communicates with humans via lights and lasers that project from the front and rear grills and only moderately resembles a car. So for those of you who have always wanted your own Batmobile, be patient… they’ll be here sooner than you think.
